ANDREW
HEYWARD: Shad Northshield was the creator and first executive producer
of SUNDAY MORNING and one of Charles' closest collaborators.
SHAD NORTHSHIELD: There was a small party, just about the same time,
in 1982. It was for my birthday. Charles gave a fine gift and he read
a short statement. He contented me as a prince. It is this: "For
the nimble-footed, madcap prince, that daffed the world aside and bid
it pass, as full of spirit as the month of May and gorgeous as the sun
in midsummer." That's King Henry IV and William Shakespeare. Now,
today, each of us, all of us, I think, millions, millions know: Who
is the prince? Charles, of course, is the nimble-footed prince, the
man, and he made us, in many more, many, many more, and he will be,
forever, "in gorgeous sun, at midsummer." Thank you.
An intellectually stimulating collection of insightful
and occasionally poignant commentaries, Charles Kuralt's People is
very highly recommended reading for students of the human condition in
general,
and legions of Charles Kuralt fans in particular. — Midwest Book
